My Las Vegas trip report by Bob Perks. (March 1997)

I stayed at the from March 10th to 18th 1997 What follows are my views on what happened during my stay, together with some pictures. I hope that you enjoy it.
Bob.

Well it's time again for a vacation from work (Yippee!)

Monday 10th March.

The trip started OK, then got worse. We arrived at the airport and checked in early. The flight left Birmingham Airport (UK) 10 mins late, then after a beautiful trans-atlantic crossing we arrived in Chicago 5 mins late, not bad for 7Hrs 55Mins eh??

We had a 2Hr 55Min delay before the connecting flight to Las Vegas. Customs & Imigration was a breeze so we got on the tram pretty quickly.
Now the bad things, the next flight was delayed around 20Mins, this arrived and passed, another 15, 15 etc.
Eventually it became a 5Hrs stopover :-(
They told us it was due to the high winds, our plane arriving fron Kansas City could not land until the wind dropped, now I know why Chicago is called the "Windy City"

After another smooth flight we eventually arrived at McCarran :-) Got the luggage and then a cab. What happened to the 'cheap cab fares'? I was charged $15.40 to the Imperial Palace. (Went direct!)

Checked in then went for a snack and coffee. Returned to the room and crashed out on the bed!
Awoke at 04:15 Tuesday, refreshed, decided to remove my clothes I slept in and take a shower :-)

Tues 11th March.

Had a light 'toast and coffee' breakfast (I can't eat in the morning) then went for a walk towards MGM to view the sights. Eventually got to the Trop and got tickets to the Folles Begere, front row and slightly to the left. Great, I thought (more later)
Made our way back to Ballys, gambling a bit here and there, just like on the way down, maybe ending up even by the time we arrived. Bought tickets for the Jubilee show, again front row, dead center.

After dinner we crashed out (again) until the alarm went off (I set it just incase!) then got changed and made our way to Ballys for Jubilee. Oh dear what a pity, front row but a bad view, you have to keep craneing your neck back and forth to see everything :-( The topless bits were OK though :-))) Apart from that, it was a truely SUPERB show! I strongly reccomend that you go see it. We saw the 'Late' show and it was well worth the $49.50 a ticket, but please get seats as far back as you can to get the best view. Left, right or center doesn't matter much.
After the show, returned to the IP for a sit at the BJ tables, made it as far as the VP at the bar :-)
A few beers and less dollars later I decided to make a phone call to 'some girls' at work back home in England as it was 10:15 AM there and 02:15 AM here (Hi Tess!)

Wed 12th March.

Another early morning, decide to hit the buffet, shame that it doesn't open for another hour! End up with coffee and grapefruit.
Cross over the road and head into Ceasers, this place is truely 'Class' at its finest isn't it? Ask at the front desk about room rates for later in the year and was quoted $169 per night, I thought that this was really good as I paid $149 at the Flamingo last September!!!

Spent the rest of the day wandering down the strip, stopping in every casino to take in the sights and drop a few bucks here and there (Does any body ever win in this town??)
Arrive in New York. I can only agree with everybody else in that NYNY is a really beautiful hotel except for that "Mowtown Cafe", shame :-(

Pop into Excalibur, then quickly pop out again, I forgot there were children in there ;-)
No, really it is nice here apart from the kids, drop a few buck's in the slots then sit in the sports book for a while to rest my weary feet. I bought the "Visit Fabulous Las Vegas" video for $9.99 (The red one) to take home with me. I find out later that the price elsewear was $13 to $20, so looks like I got a good deal.

Made our way to the Luxor to see the new bits. It looks nice, but slightly out of place doesn't it? Square pyramids? Now the construction has almost finished inside it is looking quite nice indeed.
Now we are feeling pretty tired so we cross the road to the Tropicana and get on the bus.

No wonder the buses are mostly full, a buck fifty anywhere is in my opinion good value for money.
Get on the 301 to the Flamingo, then when arrived there found that we could have taken the 302 express.
After a quick meal and change of clothes we jump back on the bus for the Folles Begere late show at the Tropicana. The show was really enjoyable, especially the comedian, he really made it,,,,, he told a few jokes, laughed,,, then we danced a while!
As with Jubilee, a seat as far back as possible will give you the best view.

Stood at the bus stop for ages chatting with 2 others, then when we mention we were staying at the IP they suggest sharing a cab. Turns out it worked out to the same price each.

Headed to the bar for a beer, then a few buck's at VP, still turn out a loser.

Thurs 13th March.

Have a late breakfast and decide that we were going to the Belz shopping mall, eventually arrive and spend the rest of the day there. Bought a few things like 2 pairs of Levis for $20 a pair. In England they are around $60 I also got 2 pairs of Rebocks on special for $12 a pair, these again are around $75 a pair in England.
When we return back to the strip I come to the conclusion that the sun is getting stronger as it burnt my head a little, through my hat!!

Visit the Auto Museum in the Imperial.
This is a MUST SEE thing to do, well worth the cost, but saying that with so many free tickets does any one actually pay to get in?
Like the card by Hitlers car!!! (Joke, if you know the back ground!!)

Friday 14th March.

Another late breakfast buffet.
Decide to wander over to The Mirage & Treasure Island for a look. Get into Hararahs, it's starting to look nice, only problem is too many people everywhere, should be nice when it is finished.

Need a restroom for my mother, QUICKLY. Wow, just made it, must have been the fruit for breakfast! Anyway this went on for most of the morning all the way from the IP to TI!! Decided the best plan was to return to the room and 'sit it out' (shame)
I left her there and dropped (YET) a few more bucks in the slots/vp and BJ tables. I'm starting to get upset a bit by now!

After dinner I went to play BJ for a while. Could I get a seat at a table?? Only the $100 table! I think not some how. Decide to have a few beers and drop more quarters in the VP.
Decide to watch some TV for the first time this trip. After 2 mins I remembered that on my last visit to the US I read one of the world's smallest book's, "Quality American Television" Geez, how do you watch such rubbish all the time?? As the saying goes, "I was watching an advertisement when there was a programme break"
I promptly turned it off and listened to the radio (Kool 105.5 FM check it out, it's a great oldies station)

Saturday 15th March.

Decide to go to Freemont. This is my first time here and I'm impressed with it immensely. I visit all the casino's and think that the Horseshoe was the classiest of the lot, as was their huge 'Danish' that I devoured!!

Freemont looks 'really Seedy' but it is just as safe here as on the strip.

Got a couple of things from the shops then made our way to the bus stop for the return journey.

After dinner I again tried to get a seat at the BJ table, again full up.
Decide to go for a walk, nipped into the Flamingo and while walking through I pass a slot where 3 Diamonds just drop in, and the fellow playing is jumping for joy as over 7,200 dollar coins spill out. (Why not me????)
Feel dejected so I wander around then wander back to the IP, I find my mother playing the nickle slots and she is up about 3 bucks after an hour. She tells me that the lady on the machine next but one recently dropped around $100, then promptly fed it ALL back in then changed another twenty.
Sad eh?
I slope off for a beer and more VP. I am coming to the conclusion that it may have the same result if I go onto the strip and toss my cash into the night air.
Then I get another beer and go find another 1/4 slot as the BJ tables are still packed solid. I pass the Pai-Gow and wait a while watching 2 Japanese people playing the $100 minimum. In 3 hand's they both lose over $1,500 EACH I then think I'm not doing so bad really :-)
Arrive at an empty seat and put a $20 bill in the hole. It returns 50 cents. Yep, 50 lousy rotten cents for 20 bucks!! Put the coins in my pocket and walk away. Now I know why the seat was vacant!!

Sunday 16th March

Walk it all the way from the IP to the Stratosphere (slowly)
As we passed the Frontier we got the pre-recorded "Don't give them your money, as we are (still) on strike" speech. Now the funniest thing, There is this sort of 'drop out' looking man with a big bucket, stopping everybody passing and asking "Any change for the disabled and war veterans?"
As I pass him I wave my right hand and said "I gave at the office" whereupon he pats my back and said "Have a nice day brother"

I almost wet myself laughing!!! The reason? I had a VERY serious accident at work last January which totally squashed my right hand flat (as paper) This then resulted in the loss of 3 fingers.
My disfigurement (diss-finger-ment?) and splint must have made him feel sorry for me. (hee hee, I still chuckle now as I am writing this)

Eventually we arrive at the Strat and get tickets to the Tower. I didn't get any last time, but as so many people have said that the cost is well worth it, I lash out $5. This is the best value for money that you can get on the strip. PLEASE if you are thinking of it, DO IT, the view is outstanding.
There is a great WEB CAM on top of here, with a live feed - Click for KLAS WEB CAM
I didn't go on the ride. I value my stomach!!!

Got the bus back but due to traffic it may have been quicker to walk,,,,,,
nar, I had a seat!

After dinner I try yet again to sit at a BJ table. Yet again they are all full. Hit the bar and the VP. Read previous days reports, ie a few beers and a few buck's in without anything out!!

Monday 17th March

Last day today :-(
Basically just walk and walk up/down the strip here and there.
Dropping cash everywhere. Buying any last minute gifts

Tuesday 18th March

After breakfast we get a cab back to the airport ($8.50) and our long flight back to the UK via Chicago.
Everything goes like clockwork. While crossing the Atlantic, over night, the pilot informs us that there is a superb view of the Hale Bopp comet just off the left hand wing. What a superb view! It was travelling from right to left with about a 40 mile tail.
A couple of hours later I looked out again, and due to the distance travelled, curvature of the earth etc the comet looked closer and it was now vertical, with a 40 mile tail. Superb indeed.
We arrived back in Birmingham, UK at 07:00 UK time and another great vacation had finished.
It's now a few days later and I'm going to book up for Nov. Unless I can afford to go sooner??
Hope to return again soon.
